Kings Park Psychiatric Center
Built and opened in 1885 and closed in 1996, Kings Park Psychiatric Center was one of four enormous mental health systems located in central Long Island; the others being Central Islip Psychiatric Center, Pilgrim Psychiatric Center, and Mason General / Edgewood State Hospital.
Today, Kings Park Psychiatric Center is abandoned except for 5 structures. Buildings 150/151 which are halfway houses that are still owned and operated by the state. Building 80 looks abandoned, but actually the Nissequoge River State Park uses it for storage. Building 62 is a garage now used by the park for their equipment. Building 125, which is the hospital administration building is used today by the parks as offices, restrooms, and a small park exhibit. And last but not least, Building 65, is the greenhouse, which is also used by the park.
St. Johnland Road separates the property into 2 sections. The section closest to the water is the Nissequoge River State Park, and the other section is owned by NYS, but it isn't a park, although workers from Nissequoge River do attend to work there.
This website will give you a tour of the buildings- inside and out, as well as the grounds, and anything else having to do with Kings Park Psychiatric Center.
